Out in the Code: The Story of Cartogram

Every app has a story. For Cartogram, our live map wallpaper app, that story begins with a simple desire: to make our phone backgrounds more personal and meaningful. We were tired of the same static images and wanted something that was both beautiful and connected to our world. This is the story of how we built it.

The Spark of an Idea

The idea for Cartogram came from a fascination with maps. Not just as tools for navigation, but as art. We started wondering: what if you could have a constantly changing, beautifully styled map of your location as your wallpaper? What if it could be a live wallpaper, subtly updating throughout the day?

This initial spark led us down a rabbit hole of Android development, map rendering, and creative design. We wanted to create an app that was powerful, yet simple to use. An app that could generate a unique piece of art for your phone in just a few taps.

Navigating the Technical Challenges

Building a live wallpaper that renders maps is not a trivial task. We faced several technical hurdles along the way:

  • Performance: A live wallpaper needs to be incredibly lightweight. It can't drain the battery or slow down the phone. We spent a lot of time optimizing our map rendering engine to ensure it was as efficient as possible.
  • Map APIs: We experimented with several different map providers and rendering libraries. We needed one that was flexible enough to allow for heavy customization, but also performant enough for a live wallpaper.
  • Android's Diversity: The Android ecosystem is vast and diverse. We had to ensure that Cartogram worked flawlessly on a wide range of devices, from high-end flagships to budget-friendly models. This meant a lot of testing and tweaking.

Designing for Delight

From the beginning, we knew that design had to be at the heart of Cartogram. We didn't just want to put a map on a screen; we wanted to create a tool for artistic expression.

We developed over 30 different map styles, each with its own unique color palette and aesthetic. We drew inspiration from vintage maps, modern graphic design, and even sci-fi interfaces. The goal was to give users a wide range of options to create a wallpaper that truly matched their style.

We also embraced Material Design, Google's design language, to create an interface that was intuitive and easy to navigate.

The "Instant App" Advantage

One of the features we're particularly proud of is that Cartogram is an "Instant App". This means you can try it out without even installing it from the Play Store. This was a key decision to reduce the friction for new users. We wanted people to experience the magic of creating their own map wallpaper as quickly as possible.

The Journey Continues

Cartogram was a labor of love. It was a project that combined our passion for design, technology, and maps. It taught us a lot about Android development, performance optimization, and the importance of a strong design vision.

We're incredibly proud of what we created, and we're excited to see what people create with it. The journey of an indie developer is full of challenges, but projects like Cartogram make it all worthwhile.

The Road to a Better Cartogram: Listening to our Users

Launching an app is just the first step. The journey truly begins when the feedback starts rolling in. We've been humbled by the positive reviews praising Cartogram's unique concept, but we've also paid close attention to the critiques.

Users have reported bugs with the wallpaper failing to update and a color editor that can be tricky to use. We've also heard your requests for new features, like automatic switching between light and dark themes.

We want you to know that we hear you. This feedback is the roadmap for Cartogram's future. We are committed to squashing these bugs and improving the user experience. While an indie studio's resources are limited, our passion isn't. Stay tuned as we work to make Cartogram the best it can be.
